RIA Novosti reports this, citing data from the statistical service of the post-Soviet country.
Over the course of the month, fruit shipments increased to $1.9 million in monetary terms. A year earlier, apple imports from the former Soviet republic were estimated at $346,100.
In May, Georgia supplied apples to only four buyers. In addition to Russia, which topped the list, the apples were purchased by Turkey ($75,6 thousand), Armenia ($27,9 thousand), and Iraq ($26,9 thousand).
First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Elena Fastova stated at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that Russia’s current self-sufficiency rate for apples is estimated at 83%. In this regard, Russia still has room for improvement, noted the deputy head of the ministry. By 2030, the self-sufficiency rate for apples should reach 100%, Fastova explained.
