She noted that she appreciates the efforts of the prime minister and the entire cabinet, and that “speculation that he wanted to combat corruption but was prevented from doing so is false.”

“I thank Mr. Munteanu for taking responsibility for the government during a difficult period when measures were needed to revive the economy and launch key structural reforms. /…/ Speculation that he wanted to combat abuses but was prevented from doing so is false. The prime minister had complete freedom to lead the government as he saw fit; he decided to step down on his own,” Sandu stated.

At the same time, she emphasized that she had expected greater involvement in making difficult decisions and greater openness toward citizens.

“I expected greater involvement in making difficult decisions, greater openness toward the people, and better consideration of opinions regarding the reforms and the reasons why we are implementing them.”

According to her, consultations on the appointment of a new government will take place next week: “We’ll see what comes out of next week’s consultations. I think it’s too early to talk about candidates.”

“It’s not easy to identify a candidate for the position of prime minister. We need to form a government fairly quickly,” added Maia Sandu.
