The appeal stresses that a delegation of the Council of Europe’s Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities will visit Moldova from 1 to 5 June 2026, within the sixth cycle of monitoring the implementation of the Convention’s provisions.
The legislative body of Gagauzia emphasizes that the autonomy is a unique example of realization of the rights to self-determination and protection of the rights of national minorities. It is also noted the importance of familiarizing international experts with the current situation in the autonomy, including the issues of preserving the linguistic, cultural and educational identity of the region.
“The Republic of Moldova, as a state party to the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, has international obligations to ensure the rights of national communities, including the protection of their linguistic, cultural and historical identity. For Gagauzia, these issues are of particular importance in the context of preservation and development of the Gagauz language, culture, traditions and full functioning of the autonomy within the framework of the legislation in force,” the appeal says.
The information on the PAG website says that the visit of the Consultative Committee representatives to the autonomy may become an opportunity for international experts to get acquainted objectively with the peculiarities of Gagauzia’s functioning, with topical issues related to the realization of the rights of national minorities, as well as with the problems faced by Gagauzia when exercising the autonomous powers defined by the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and the Law “On the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri)”.
