
According to the latest published data, rail, road, river and air transport companies transported 4.5 million tons of cargo in January-March 2026, 15.1% more than in January-March 2025. The total volume of cargo transportation amounted to 1,332.3 million ton-kilometers, up 14.7% compared to January-March 2025. This is reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Road transport accounts for 88.4% of freight transportation. In the first quarter, there was both an increase in the volume of goods transported by road (by 17.7%) and the transportation distance (by 15.6%), compared to January-March 2025, the NBS said.
Road transport enterprises transported 4.0 million tons of goods, of which 2.8 million tons (70.0% of the total) were domestic and 1.2 million tons (30.0%) were international. This indicates a noticeable revival of economic activity in Moldova compared to the decline in the same period of the previous year.
The share of goods transported by road in the total volume of goods transported by this mode of transport in Chisinau amounted to 54.7%, in the northern regions – 16.8%, in the central regions – 17.8%, in the southern regions – 5.7%, and in the Gagauz Autonomous District – 5.0%.
Railway transportation, which accounts for 11.3% in the structure of transported goods, in January-March 2026 also showed an increase in both the volume of transported goods and their duration by 2.3% and, respectively, by 4.0%.
On a year-on-year basis, air transportation remained the outsider in the freight transportation market during this period. There, there was a further decrease in both the volume of cargo transported and its duration by 42.7% and, respectively, by 56.7%.
