Dorin Jungietu: Moldova is building a reliable energy supply portfolio

"Moldova does not rely on one source or one route. We are building step by step a balanced and reliable energy supply portfolio that will ensure stability and predictability. It is crucial for us that this diversification is done at a sustainable price and that the security of supply for citizens remains an absolute priority," Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said.

Round Table "Development of Energy Corridors in the Three Seas Region"

He participated in the round table “Development of Energy Corridors in the Three Seas Region”, organized within the framework of the Three Seas Initiative under the auspices of the Croatian Chairmanship at the invitation of the US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.

The event was held in Dubrovnik on April 28-29, 2026, as part of the Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum, according to the ministry’s information. The forum brought together high-level officials from the United States, the European Union and participating countries. The meeting was also attended by Ditte Juul Jørgensen, director general for energy at the European Commission.

Vulnerability persists

In his speech, the minister emphasized that Moldova has reached a higher level of energy security compared to the 2021-2022 period, but vulnerability remains due to the lack of domestic gas production and own storage facilities. In this context, the national energy strategy is based on the diversification of supply sources and routes, combining natural gas supplied from Romania, including from the future Neptun Deep project, as well as other non-Russian gas sources via Greece and the Vertical Corridor, with guaranteed transportation rights, storage access and financial guarantees.

The minister stressed that Moldova is already applying specific measures to strengthen the sustainability of the energy system, including maintaining 15% of storage commitments and ensuring a baseline level of 57 million m³ of reserves for the cold season.

Overall, the country’s energy security is based on four main pillars: reliable supply contracts, guaranteed transmission capacity, access to storage and financial guarantees.

A functional corridor is needed

During the discussions, the Minister advocated for closer regional cooperation based on clear and predictable rules, standardized energy capacity products and effective cross-border coordination. He also emphasized the importance of using existing infrastructure, including the Trans-Balkan route, and the need to reduce regulatory and commercial fragmentation to ensure full utilization of energy corridors.

“Moldova does not need a theoretical corridor, but a functional, secure and affordable one. We have already taken concrete steps through market opening, disciplined storage and coordinated capacity mechanisms. It is important that the regional structure develops at the same pace, so that these efforts bring real benefits to citizens and the economy,” the minister emphasized.

In the framework of the event, Dorin Jungietu held bilateral meetings with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and European Commission Director General for Energy Ditte Juul Jorgensen.
