Alexey Buzu
This time, Government Secretary-General Alexei Buzu, who is overseeing this important initiative, is addressing the public. He is assuring citizens that no one will lose their village or any of the progress the local administration has made there so far. On the contrary, in return, residents will gain a stronger municipal government. This means more jointly managed funds and higher-quality services for all citizens.
“Some citizens fear that if their villages merge, their village will disappear,” he noted. “The answer is simple: no. The village will retain its name, church, people, and history. Only the mayor’s offices are merging so that the administration becomes stronger.”
According to the latest information presented to the government, approximately 790 municipalities in Moldova are currently involved in the voluntary merger process.
As a reminder, in late January, the government announced the start of preparations for a local government reform aimed at modernizing rural administrations and improving public services. Consultations were held, following which a reform concept was presented.
Later, Parliament approved changes that simplify and improve the process of voluntary municipal mergers. According to the State Chancellery, these changes were developed following consultations in which more than 4,500 mayors and citizens participated.
