Trump Threatened to Cut Off Trade with Spain Over Its Stance on NATO

U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Spain on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, stating that he did not want to continue trade relations with that country because of what he considered to be its insufficient participation in the alliance’s activities.

Speaking to reporters, Donald Trump called Spain a “terrible partner” in NATO and stated that the country “doesn’t participate and doesn’t pay.”

“We no longer want to do any business with Spain. Spain is a terrible NATO partner. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I want nothing to do with Spain,” the Anadolu Agency quoted the U.S. president as saying.

According to Trump, he also instructed U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to “immediately halt all trade with Spain.”

“Please halt all trade with Spain, including visits… I no longer want to do any business with them. Do this immediately,” he said.

The U.S. president once again expressed dissatisfaction with the level of support from NATO allies, stating that the alliance had not done enough to help the United States during the war with Iran.

It remains unclear whether Trump’s statements will be followed by official decisions from the U.S. administration regarding trade relations with Spain.
