According to the head of the legislature, the reform of local public administration enjoys widespread support at the local level: the process has already been launched in more than 760 of the country’s 890 settlements. Igor Grosu emphasized that the central government will continue to support municipalities that choose this path to strengthen their financial capacity.
The Speaker of Parliament addressed mayors, council members, and citizens, refuting rumors spread by political opponents:
“We hear that some opponents of the local public administration reform are going door to door, spreading panic and confusion through various lies. The answer is simple: the reform continues. I am pleased to see that more and more communities are choosing to join forces and create strong municipal administrations.”
Grosu highlighted the joint efforts made in recent months by local elected officials and the State Chancellery, explaining that decisions are made through direct consultation with the public—via public hearings, village meetings, and public opinion polls.
The deadline for local councils to decide on voluntary consolidation is July 31. To date, seven clusters (groups of settlements), comprising a total of 20 municipalities, have already fully completed the entire legal process.
“I urge everyone to take action in the near future to complete the processes that have been started. I am confident that we will succeed and create strong municipalities—capable of attracting funding and improving the quality of services for our citizens. I wish you every success!” the speaker concluded.
