The tender committee opened the technical proposals for the construction of 170 MW wind farms with energy storage systems

The Ministry of Energy’s tender commission for granting the status of a major producer has opened the technical proposals submitted as part of the second tender for the construction of wind power plants with a total capacity of 170 MW and battery-based energy storage systems with a minimum capacity of 44 MWh.

By the deadline (June 18, 2026), 16 proposals had been submitted by investors interested in developing renewable energy projects in Moldova. After the proposals were accepted for participation in the tender, the technical proposals were opened. The total capacity proposed by the participants significantly exceeds the volume put out to tender: the proposals cover more than 423 MW of wind power capacity and more than 305 MWh of energy storage capacity.

“The high level of investor interest confirms the attractiveness of the Republic of Moldova’s energy sector and the business community’s confidence in the government’s policies. Strong competition in the auction creates the conditions for competitive prices, energy supplies for domestic consumption, low prices, and the attraction of significant investments in the country’s energy infrastructure,” said Energy Minister Dorin Junghiu.

The auction represents an important step toward achieving Moldova’s goals regarding the development of renewable energy sources and the strengthening of energy security. Unlike the first round of auctions, this auction also includes a requirement to install energy storage capacity, designed to promote the flexibility and stability of the national power grid.

Previously, the commission and government agencies assessed the compliance of the companies participating in the tender with the established criteria. In the next stage, the Tender Commission will evaluate the technical documentation, after which the participants’ financial proposals will be opened in accordance with the provisions of the tender documentation and applicable legislation.

The selected projects will receive the status of a large qualified producer and a 15-year guarantee of purchase for the electricity they generate—a mechanism that ensures investment predictability and facilitates the attraction of the necessary financing for project implementation. For the Republic of Moldova, the new capacity represents a diversification of renewable energy sources, as solar energy currently accounts for two-thirds of the country’s renewable capacity.

In recent years, Moldova has demonstrated one of the fastest growth rates in renewable energy capacity in the region. Installed capacity exceeded 1 GW in 2026, compared to just 76 MW in 2020.

The second tender for large-scale producer status is aimed at developing wind power plants and energy storage systems with a capacity of 170 MW and a minimum storage capacity of 44 MWh. The integration of storage capacity will enable more efficient use of renewable energy and help reduce imbalances in the power grid.

The results of the tender will be announced after the bid evaluation process is completed.
