This was reported by HotNews.ro. According to union sources, about 20,000 people are expected to take part in the protest.
“Enough! Education demands respect! Dear colleagues, tomorrow we will take to the streets again. We will gather in Victoria Square to demand that our rights be respected!” the publication quotes a statement from the “Spiru Haret” Federation of Education Workers’ Unions.
Union activists will hold a protest in front of the government building and then march to the parliament building.
“The recently imposed austerity measures and the government’s indifference to the commitments made in recent years are forcing us to take to the streets once again. Without a firm and united response, our rights will once again be violated. (…) Every education worker has the right to decent social and professional conditions and to recognition of their work through fair wages. Every child has the right to a quality education,” emphasizes the Federation of Education Workers’ Unions in its statement.
According to union leaders, the new wage law “condemns” teachers to poverty.
The draft of the new law on a unified salary system constitutes “a flagrant violation of current legislation, a disregard for commitments made to labor unions, and irrefutable proof that the government, the President of Romania, and political parties are burying education, rather than viewing it as the foundation upon which the nation’s future is built,” the publication noted, summarizing the unions’ position in late April.
