The issue of Ukraine has become one of the central topics at the G7 summit in France, where European countries are seeking to maintain their influence over the future negotiation process, Bloomberg notes.
European Strategy: Bringing Ukraine Back to the Center of the Agenda
According to the publication, European allies are gradually trying to shift Donald Trump’s approach to the Ukraine issue, using diplomatic contacts and meetings on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany hope to convince the U.S. president to support a negotiation format that would take into account the interests of Ukraine and European countries.
Washington’s attention had previously been focused on other international crises, but European partners have succeeded in bringing the Ukrainian issue back among the key topics of discussion. During meetings with Trump, they discussed military support for Ukraine, increasing pressure on Russia, and possible conditions for a future diplomatic settlement.
What Has Changed in the U.S. Position
Trump had previously stated his desire to quickly bring the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to an end, but his approach to potential negotiations raised concerns among some European allies, who feared that Kyiv’s interests might not be adequately represented, Bloomberg notes.
At the G7 summit, the U.S. president reiterated the need to reach an agreement between the parties to the conflict. At the same time, the specific parameters of a potential peace process remain a subject of negotiation. European leaders advocate maintaining pressure on Moscow and providing Ukraine with long-term security guarantees.
In particular, G7 leaders agreed to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions targeting the energy sector. Sources familiar with the negotiations told Bloomberg about this.
The publication notes that, according to a French diplomatic source, the drop in global energy prices amid the U.S.-Iran deal made it easier to agree on sanctions against Russian oil and gas exports at the summit.
Europe’s Role in Future Negotiations
Another key issue was the role of European countries in a potential diplomatic process.
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany believe that any sustainable agreement must take into account European security and the participation of countries in the region, since Europe is one of the largest sources of financial and military support for Ukraine.
According to European representatives, the negotiation process should include not only a cessation of hostilities but also a mechanism to guarantee Ukraine’s security.
The conflict in Ukraine continues to affect energy markets, European defense spending, investment decisions, and the budgetary policies of EU member states.
For businesses, the degree of political certainty remains a key factor. A possible shift in the U.S. approach to Ukraine could affect sanctions policy, energy markets, and the region’s prospects for recovery.
