Eugenia Gutsul
During the hearing, the head of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauz-Yeri consistently denied all charges and stated that she had not committed any illegal actions. She considers the prosecution and the verdict as politically motivated.
The international lawyers of Eugenia Gutsul, Spaniard Gonzalo Boye and Frenchman William Juli, earlier stated that they would definitely apply to the European Court of Human Rights upon completion of all internal procedures in Moldova. They expressed confidence that the ECHR would most likely acquit their client.
After familiarizing themselves with the Gutsul case, the lawyers pointed out the violation of the right of the head of Gagauzia to a fair trial, impartiality and presumption of innocence. They also noted that Gutsul’s case was considered in an unusually short period of time and the verdict lacks sufficient evidence.
