Alexander Makidon
“That the prosecutor found 75,000 euros in my parents’ house may seem unbelievable. Even if the truth is that my parents worked hard, saved the money and kept it that way, and we found it after their deaths, it is very difficult to convey the truth today after so many years of lies. This money was not a secret – both my sister and I had known of its existence and where it was kept for many years, as it was our parents’ savings accumulated by the time they died at the ages of 53 and 56 respectively. My father was engaged in various activities: exporting apples to the Russian Federation, importing cars from Germany and Poland, officially working in Israel, and together with my mother they founded and operated a sole proprietorship, which operated from 1995 until their deaths,” the prosecutor said.
According to him, the money was reflected in the income and asset declaration back in 2018 – at the time of receiving the inheritance, well before the external verification procedure against him began.
At the same time, Makidon believes that the wave of criticism and irony in the public space is aimed at discrediting the prosecutor’s office and undermining reforms in the justice system.
“I understand that people demand as many details as possible to get to the bottom of things, but no matter how many personal family details I reveal, no matter how many times I repeat that it is true and that my sister can confirm it, it will not convince those who have already decided everything for themselves. And, on the other hand, nothing will stop the smear campaign that has been launched to hit not so much me as the prosecutor’s office and undermine the progress that is being made in the justice system after years of waiting,” reads a message posted by Makidon on social media.
We will remind, on April 30, President Maia Sandu signed a decree appointing Alexandru Makidon to the post of Prosecutor General. Before that, he had been acting head of the institution for almost a year.
The appointment took place after the Supreme Council of Prosecutors, at a meeting on April 16, approved the report of the Evaluation Commission, which recognized that the candidate meets the criteria of ethical and financial integrity stipulated by law and has successfully passed the external verification.
