Lack of internet in Iran: a “silent earthquake”

Iran's record-long internet outage is hitting private businesses hard. Business owners warn that it could lead to mass layoffs and business closures. Losses from lack of access "to the net" are estimated in the billions of dollars.

According to the global monitor NetBlocks, the near-total lack of access to the Internet by the Iranian population for more than 70 days has become “the longest recorded nationwide Internet blackout in a connected society.” Iran’s economic losses from these restrictions of more than $2.6 billion, according to Bloomberg news agency.

Leading Iranian business newspaper Donya-e Eqtesad compared the scale of damage to a “silent earthquake”, which paralyzes the economy as much as US and Israeli air strikes. The publication estimated the losses of the Iranian economy at more than four quadrillion rials, which at market exchange rates equals almost $2.5 billion.
