The information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the visa-free regime with the EU states that the large number of beneficiaries relative to the population of the Republic of Moldova confirms the usefulness of free movement in the Schengen area. It facilitates the maintenance of ties with relatives and friends, especially in the diaspora, and provides access to tourist and business opportunities. The national authorities continue to ensure the implementation of the conditions that underpinned the liberalization of the visa regime and take into account the recommendations contained in the annual reports of the European Commission on the visa suspension mechanism in the European Union.
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls that as of April 10, 2026, the European Union has introduced an entry/exit system (EEAS) at the external borders. This does not change the rules for entry and stay in the Schengen area, but may increase the time for checks and data collection. It is therefore recommended that:
– Allocate extra time to go through border procedures;
– avoid too short stops.
The Schengen area includes 26 of the 27 member states of the European Union (excluding Ireland), as well as Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
