Almost 130 million lei will be allocated to fight against natural disasters

Moldova will implement a strategy to counteract climate disasters. The main goal is to minimize the economic damage, which has exceeded 23 billion lei in the last 15 years alone, and to create a modern system of warning the population about impending threats.

drought

According to the Ministry of Environment, the main challenge for the country is drought: although it accounts for only 1% of the total number of emergencies, it accounts for more than 70% of all material losses. Experts emphasize that without systemic intervention, the vulnerability of agriculture and the shortage of drinking water in rural areas will only increase.

In addition to droughts, the program highlights the vulnerability to local floods and landslides, which, due to worn-out infrastructure and degradation of more than 60% of soils, are increasingly destroying housing and roads. The situation is further complicated by forest fires, massive vegetation dieback and acute shortages of quality drinking water. All this is coupled with the technical backwardness of monitoring systems, which does not allow for timely forecasting of threats and prompt notification of the population.

One of the key directions of the new program will be technical re-equipment of monitoring services. Within the framework of the project it is planned to introduce advanced early warning systems and create a unified risk map. Earlier, as Logos Press has already written, the Government approved the concept of the warning system “MD-ALERT“. It is assumed that it will be fully implemented by 2027.

The program provides not only technical, but also natural protection measures. By 2030, it is planned to significantly expand the area of forest plantations, which play the role of a natural barrier against soil erosion and landslides. Special attention will be paid to the restoration of aquatic ecosystems and cleaning of small river beds, which should reduce the risk of localized flooding caused by more frequent heavy rainfall.

The implementation of the plans will require 129.8 million lei. The document was approved at the level of state secretaries last week, and now it is to be examined at a cabinet meeting.
