According to the politician, it is important not only to recognize that the “5+2” format does not function today, but also to understand whether the proposed alternative is capable of bringing real results.
“A new format of negotiations without real parity will turn the Transnistrian settlement into a fruitless political game,” Roibu believes. – “It is not enough to declare the format ‘dead’ for the reality on the ground to change. The conflict reflects real interests and influences, and the new structure should take these factors into account”.
He notes the need to speed up the search for solutions for the country’s reintegration, pointing to the geopolitical importance of solving the Transnistrian issue.
The principle of parity is necessary
At the same time, the politician emphasizes that the former format had an important advantage – the participation of all parties, including Russia. “It is impossible to build a stable negotiation mechanism excluding one of the participants. Diplomacy requires dialog even with inconvenient partners,” the politician said.
Commenting on the proposal for a new format with the participation of such parties as the European Union, the United States, Romania and Ukraine, Dumitru Roibu expressed doubts about respecting the principle of parity and trust.
In his opinion, the participation of predominantly parties in tense relations with Russia may undermine the balance of the negotiations and reduce the chances of achieving real progress.
