Small and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of Moldova’s economy

The share of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Moldova's economy increased significantly after the National Bureau of Statistics recalculated registered companies according to a new methodology.

According to the data of the Public Services Agency, there are 68.7 thousand enterprises registered in the country. Of these, only 500 (0.8%) can be classified as large. The remaining 68.2 thousand are small and medium-sized (99.2%).

Among them:

– 60.6 thousand microenterprises (88%);

– 6.3 thousand small enterprises (9%);

– 1.2 thousand medium-sized enterprises (2%).

The total revenues of all Moldovan enterprises in 2025 amounted to 668.6 billion lei. Of these, the share of large companies was 54% (360.6 billion lei), and of small and medium-sized companies – 46% (308 billion lei).

By the number of personnel. In total, 543 thousand employees worked in the Moldovan economy last year. Of them, 187 thousand or 34% worked at large enterprises, and 356 thousand or 66% – at small and medium-sized enterprises.

Small and medium-sized enterprises account for about 90% of all companies in the world, providing up to 70% of jobs and contributing up to 70% to the world GDP. In developed countries, the role of SMEs is higher, for example, in China they provide more than 60% of GDP, and in the USA – about 56% of GDP and more than 50% of employment.

In total, there are over 400 million registered SMEs in the world.
