Caroline Linte: “Deep-processed milk products are the domain of rich countries”

Producing protein products for sports or baby food from whey is a high-margin business, but only countries with a very large raw material base and high investment potential can afford to create it, Logos Press reports.

This opinion was expressed by Caroline Linte, Executive Director of the Patronal Association of Milk and Dairy Producers Lapte, in her commentary to the Logos Press article on the competitiveness of the cheese business in Ukraine and Moldova.

“This is a very promising and potentially highly profitable business,” she noted. – However, it requires a very large investment in high-tech equipment, as well as a stable and extensive flow of high-quality raw materials. In this case, whey.

As far as I know, in the post-Soviet space a consortium of livestock farmers managed to create such a plant in Estonia, with large donor funding. This plant supplies raw materials to a greater or lesser extent to all the Baltic States. And the process of pricing is controlled by the farmers themselves, which is important from the point of view of business profitability.

Protein products obtained from whey are used, among other things, in the production of baby food. However, their main buyers are producers of special high-protein food for athletes. The USA is a very large producer and buyer of such products.

However, taking into account the changing customs policy of this country, it is not very clear whether whey protein produced in Europe will be competitive on the American market”.
