Three more gold medals were added to the Norwegian national team’s trophy cabinet. In biathlon, two representatives of the Scandinavian country took the podium in the men’s individual 20km race. Norwegian Johan-Olav Botn became the Olympic champion without a single miss.

The favorite of the race, Frenchman Eric Perrault, settled for the silver medal due to a miss at the second firing line. Norwegian Sturla Holm Legreid also took bronze with one miss.

Two biathletes representing Moldova – Pavel Magazeev and Maxim Macarov – took part in the race. Magazeev took the 45th place, having made three misses and was 6 min 30.8 sec behind the winner. Makarov with five mistakes and more than 13 minutes behind took 84th place among 89 participants of the race.

Seven-time Olympic champion

Skier Johannes Klebo won the sprint classic style race. American Ben Ogden finished less than a second behind the outstanding Norwegian. Another Norwegian representative, Oscar Opstad Wike, took third place.

The victory allowed the 29-year-old athlete to become a seven-time Olympic champion. He has one more gold medal left to win to catch up with his compatriots in the number of Olympic victories – Ole Einar Bjørndalen (biathlon), Marit Bjørgen and Bjørn Daly (both ski racing).

The third medal of the day for the Norwegian team was brought by freestyle skier Birk Ruud, who became a two-time Olympic champion. At the 2022 Games he won the Big Air discipline, this time Ruud won the Slopestyle. Alexander Hall (USA) took second place and Luke Harrington (New Zealand) was third.

Sweden dominated the women’s ski sprint, taking the entire podium. For 26-year-old Lynn Svan, the victory at the Olympics was the debut in her career. Compatriots Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist completed the top three.

Biggest surprise of the day

American skiers Mikaela Shiffrin and Bree Johnson were unexpectedly out of the podium in the women’s team combination. Ariane Riedler and Katharina Huber of Austria won gold medals. The silver medalists were Kira Weidl-Winkelmann and Emma Eicher (Germany), and the bronze medalists were Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Molzan (USA).

The day also included mixed team finals. The Swedes triumphed in curling, defeating the USA in the final. Italy’s mixed team won the Olympic gold medal in short track speed skating, while Slovenia topped in ski jumping.

The Norwegians are pulling away from the pursuers

In the team medal standings, the Norwegian national team strengthened its advantage. Over the four days, Norwegian athletes won 12 medals, six of which were top medals.

The teams of Germany and Sweden shared the second place (three gold, two silver and one bronze medal each). The Swiss won one silver medal less, they are in fourth place.
