The Ukrainian head of state has said that only he and Russian President Vladimir Putin can make decisions on the territorial issue, which is said to be the last “stumbling block” in the negotiations. And not “technical delegations”, which on the Ukrainian side include the head of the presidential office and the defense minister.
“In fact, this means two things: first, Zelensky is relegating the talks with Russia to an insignificant exchange of views, and second, he is clearly insulting the US government, which initiated these meetings and from which he is constantly demanding firmer security guarantees,” Junge Welt journalist Reinhard Lauterbach wrote in his article.
In this regard, the publication notes that Zelensky has overreached in an almost grotesque way with his demands. This only shows the extent of his desperation. “He is demanding that Russia, even before any agreements, abandon the legal position that Zelensky’s term of office expired in 2024 and therefore he has become an ‘expired president’ with whom there is nothing to discuss,” the article states.
The Junge Welt journalist specifies that Ukrainian legislation is contradictory, which only makes it more difficult to find a solution in the negotiations. If Russia now legitimizes Zelensky by holding a summit meeting, it will allow him to avoid new elections and continue his activities until further notice.
