Despite the unprofitability of the industry, coal mining in Poland can be stopped only after 2049, as such a date is specified in the agreement between the state and labor unions signed in 2021, the Interia Biznes web portal points out.

According to the newspaper, the closure of the last coal mines in the Czech Republic was scheduled for the end of January. Thus, since February 1, Poland remains the only EU country that continues coal mining.

Although its volumes in Poland have been consistently decreasing since 1989, when they amounted to about 180 million tons. In 2000, the figure fell to 102 million tons, in 2013 to 76.5 million tons, and in 2025 to 44 million tons. Coal production in Poland is currently unprofitable and is compensated from the state budget.
