The competition aims to investigate factors affecting brain health across the lifespan and covers two areas: neurological, mental and sensory disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. Projects must be interdisciplinary, that is, bring together different fields of science, and investigate the combination of biological, social and environmental factors that influence brain function. In addition, they should address at least two aspects: the mechanisms of action of the identified factors, early diagnosis and prognosis, or disease prevention and treatment.
Universities, research centers, hospitals, foundations and other health and social support organizations are eligible to participate.
International consortia must include at least three partners from different countries, including two EU states or associated countries, with no more than two partners from the same country.
The project implementation period is up to three years.
Applications are being accepted in two stages: pre-applications will be accepted until March 10, 2026, after which the best projects will be invited to submit full applications until June 30, 2026. Funding decisions will be made in November 2026 and projects are scheduled to start in early to mid 2027.
The competition covers 54 research institutions from 33 countries and the total budget exceeds €500 million.
