The new structure will strengthen the country’s ability to detect and suppress cross-border crimes, including human trafficking and terrorism.

The project was implemented with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Program to Suppress the Movement of Terrorists.

The unit brings together under one roof the Border and National Police, the Customs Service and the Information and Security Service, allowing for rapid analysis of passenger data and quick response to threats.

The office is equipped with specialized UN software and complies with international standards for the protection of personal data and human rights.

“The opening of the Passenger Information Unit headquarters is an important step in strengthening the State’s ability to anticipate risks and keep citizens safe. We are investing in modern infrastructure, digital tools and well-trained professionals so that decisions are based on accurate data and the authorities’ response is fast and coordinated,” said Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin.

Moldova became the seventh country in the world to implement the system, after Norway, Luxembourg, Botswana, Georgia, the Philippines and Mongolia.

The IOM assessed that the launch of the unit strengthens national security and institutional resilience and brings the country closer to EU standards in border and migration control.
