Musk’s claims against OpenAI and Microsoft reach $134 billion.
Note that OpenAI was founded by Altman and Musk in 2015 as a non-profit research startup in the field of artificial intelligence. The lawsuit says that Musk then invested $38 million, or 60% of its initial capital, in the firm. He also helped hire the first employees, make contacts and lend credibility to the project.
In 2018, Musk stepped down from OpenAI’s board of directors and began developing his own projects. One of them today is Grok, an AI chatbot on social network X, a competitor to ChatGPT.
After Musk left, OpenAI began partnering with Microsoft, selling it some shares. Later, the company still entered the market with ChatGPT and made billions of dollars on it.
The lawsuit is based on the fact that OpenAI is now worth about $500 billion. Musk calls this an undue profit made through his investment. Therefore, he demands OpenAI to give him between $65.6 and $109.43 billion, and Microsoft to give him between $13.3 and $25.06 billion.
OpenAI called the lawsuit “without merit.” A Microsoft lawyer said the claims against the corporation in the lawsuit are unsubstantiated. According to him, both companies have already attached to the case a motion to disagree with Musk’s position.
