The 25-year-old lifted 169 kg in the snatch and 200 kg in the deadlift. His final weight (369 kg) allowed him to climb to the bottom step of the podium, and he also took third place in each individual exercise. Robu’s result in the dual meet was 18 kg less than winner Yeison Lopez of Colombia (387 kg). Kwang Ryol Roh from North Korea, who took the final second place, surpassed his Moldovan opponent by 8 kg (377 kg).
In the snatch, the weightlifters were in the same order: “gold” went to Lopez (177 kg), “silver” went to Ryol Ro (172 kg), Marin Robu lifted 4 kg less. The athletes from Colombia and DPRK swapped places in the javelin: Ryol Ro became the winner (215 kg), Lopez – silver medalist (210 kg). The gap between Ryol Roh and the second place was 10 kg.
Robu won bronze for the second time in a row at the World Weightlifting Championships. At last year’s tournament in Manama (Bahrain), the leading Moldovan weightlifter demonstrated a final result of 379 kg, at the same time winning a small silver medal in snatch (173 kg) and taking the fourth place in jerk (206 kg). Then Sergiu Kretzu’s ward was represented in a heavier weight category – up to 89 kg.
Marin Robu became the only representative of Moldova at the World Championships in Norway. The coaching staff of the national team earlier decided to intensify the preparation of other athletes for the European Youth and Junior Championships, which will be held from October 28 to November 4 in Durres (Albania).
The World Weightlifting Championships will last until October 11. More than 500 athletes from 89 countries are taking part in it.
