
In August, the state’s total debt increased by 1.5 billion lei, including by 1.153 billion lei due to the internal state debt and 362 million lei due to the external state debt. Compared to August 2024, the total state debt increased by 17 billion lei, or 15.6%. In relation to GDP, it amounted to 35.8%, whereas a year earlier -33.6% of GDP. As in previous years, the public debt still accounts for the major share of the total public sector debt (96.9%).
In January-August, according to the data of the Ministry of Finance, the domestic public debt increased by 3,396.01 million lei and amounted to 47,357.2 million lei. The change in the domestic public debt was due to the increase in the issuance of SS on the primary market by 4,073.1 million lei, the issuance of SS through the electronic platform for households by 408.6 million lei and the redemption of converted securities in the amount of 1,085.8 million lei.
The state’s external debt increased by only 362 million lei in August and amounted to 78,384.24 million lei ($4,711.16 million) YTD. Net external financing for 8 months from the beginning of the year reached a positive value, amounting to about $174.87 million. At the same time, the fluctuation of the US dollar exchange rate against other currencies during this period reached positive values and amounted to $346.00 million.
Thus, the balance of external public debt as of the end of August 2025 increased compared to the balance of external public debt as of January 1, 2025 by $520.87 million, or by about 12.43%.
