Moldovan economy’s dependence on imports grows

This conclusion was reached by economic analyst Dumitru Barbalat. He noted that against the background of growing imports, domestic production is falling and the volume of trade in locally produced goods on the domestic market is decreasing, which affects the amount of taxes paid from business activities.

In 2024, the tax on business income amounted to 50.7% of the total income tax (this column also includes personal income tax).

Only this correlation is not only for goods, but also for inflation. Costs and inflation are imported from other countries at the same time.

In addition to domestic sales, exports of domestically produced goods also fall, which reduces the inflow of foreign exchange into the country and affects the current account deficit of the country’s balance of payments. In January-June 2025, exports of Moldovan-made goods amounted to $1226.2 million (76.6% of total exports), which is 9.8% less than in the same period of 2024.

And Moldovan goods are replaced mainly by European products, Dumitru Barbalat said. In 2024/2023, their imports increased by 8.6%, and in the first half of 2025/2024 – by 31.7%.

At the same time, the share of imports from other countries is decreasing significantly. In 2024/2023 there was an increase of 45%, in the first half of 2025/2024. – only by 7.3%.
