Moldova has begun screening with the EU on the environment

Representatives of the Ministry of Environment in Brussels, together with their EU colleagues, have begun assessing the chapter on environmental protection and climate change. This chapter involves bringing Moldovan legislation into line with more than 200 European directives and standards.

Technical discussions with representatives of the European Commission are scheduled to take place over the next five days. Moldova’s progress in the field of environmental protection will be presented, as well as measures to harmonise national policy with European standards on the protection of natural resources, air and water quality, and public health.

“We hope to continue to receive support from the European Commission in determining the technical assistance needed to transpose the Community acquis. We also hope to receive targeted investments for the modernisation of infrastructure in such important areas as waste management, air quality, water and climate change. In addition, support in assessing the financial impact of the implementation of the Industrial Emissions Directive remains essential for the effective planning of this transition,” said Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu.

By implementing European environmental policy, the Ministry of Environment aims to modernise waste collection and recycling systems, improve drinking water quality, protect ecosystems — forests, rivers and endangered species — and manage hazardous chemicals responsibly.

At the same time, one of the main tasks is to develop early warning systems designed to save lives in emergencies such as floods, fires, earthquakes or other natural disasters. The implementation of these mechanisms, together with environmental protection measures, contributes to the creation of a sustainable economy in which the safety of citizens and the conservation of natural resources become top priorities.

Moldova and the European Union launched a bilateral legislative screening process in July 2024. On the official EU website, this process is referred to as the first stage of accession negotiations, while in the official press release of the Moldovan government, it is referred to as the second stage.

The screening process is divided into 35 chapters, grouped into six clusters. It is of vital importance as it forms the basis for bilateral negotiations between the EU and various candidate countries.
