As Deutsche Welle Deutsche Welle, the U.S. authorities have long demanded that the Chinese concern ByteDance, which owns TikTok, sell its American division. They fear that Beijing may gain access to personal data of American users of this social network. The relevant law was signed by Trump’s predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden.
The deadline for the sale of the American division of the social network was set for January 19 – the day before Trump’s inauguration. However, upon taking office, the president extended it first until April 5 and then for another 75 days.
But in this case, we are not talking about a simple business deal, but practically an interstate agreement. Therefore, the U.S. President decided to personally get involved in its realization. In an interview with Fox News on June 29, he said that he had found buyers for TikTok, but he would name them “in about two weeks”.
And explained that the deal would likely require the approval of Chinese President Xi Jingping. Donald Trump expressed confidence that such approval would be obtained.
Probably, after that, the names of the buyers will be announced. Or not announced – if China opposes the sale.
