Although in May, compared to April, the National Bank recorded a decrease in the volume of new term deposits (-8.5%), lei deposits, on the contrary, showed an impressive growth of 28%. Out of the attracted 4,063.8 million lei, about 3.2 billion lei were “domestic products”. Foreign exchange earnings in May sagged considerably – banks received the equivalent of 875 million lei (-55%).

Deposits of individuals in the reporting month amounted to over 3,069.0 million lei, which is 3.3% more than in the previous month. In annual terms, the deposits of individuals increased by 76%. In foreign currency, on the contrary, they are melting down (- 4.2%). Deposits with the term from 2 to 5 years are popular (50.8% of total deposits of individuals).

The average nominal rate on newly attracted deposits in national currency amounted to 5.17%, while on deposits in foreign currency – 1.35%. For legal entities it does not reach these values on lei deposits – 4.9%, “not stingy” on foreign currency deposits – 1.9%. And by volume, deposits of legal entities are incommensurable with private accounts.

In May 2025, compared to the previous month, the deposits of legal entities in national currency increased by 53% and amounted to 820.2 million lei, while in foreign currency decreased by 5.6 times (!) and “weighed” 164.7 million lei. The annual evolution of bank deposits of legal persons is smoother: lei deposits increased by 2.4 times, in foreign currency decreased by 38%.
