This was announced during the EU4Climate Resilience conference held at the end of last week in Chisinau. The funds are intended to support settlements in terms of their adaptation to climate change. Bidders for the grants were required to be part of the international Covenant of Mayors program, as well as to have an approved plan of measures to adapt the settlement to climate change.
At the first stage of the selection process, 20 mayoralties participated, while 11 participated in the second stage, and Ceadir-Lunga and Cantemir were recognized as winners. Contracts will be signed with them, according to which Ceadir-Lunga will receive 600 thousand euros free of charge. In the process of project implementation, the City Hall will have to add its own funds in the amount of 270 thousand euros.
The donors will give a grant of 470 thousand euros to the town of Cantemir. The contribution of the City Hall will be at least 5% of the total amount.
In the course of project implementation, rainwater harvesting structures and systems for its further use for irrigation purposes will be constructed. The Chadir-Lunga project is more complex. It involves not only water harvesting, but also planting of green plantations. A similar project was implemented a few years ago in the city of Leova, where a storm water collection system was built.
EU4Climate is a project of six countries of the EU Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It aims to overcome the challenges of climate change and develop a low-emission economy. The project is funded by the EU and administered in Moldova by the German Agency for International Development (GIZ).
