“Zero growth” in the industry

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, it is true that in April 2025, compared to April 2024, there is an increase of 1%. It is due to an increase in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning by 88.1%. At the same time, a decrease was recorded in the extractive (-2.3%) and manufacturing industries (-5.2%).

That is, the small gain in April was influenced by the increase in tariffs for energy carriers and their distribution, while production in the real sector continued to fall.

At the same time, it is not necessary to speak about any stable trends in one or another segment of industry. In the first four months of 2025, the overall decline of 0.7% was driven by a 3.5% drop in manufacturing output. However, an increase of 19.9% was recorded in the extractive industries. And also in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning by 4.9%.

As a result, Moldova has experienced almost zero growth in industry as a whole since the beginning of the year, with notable monthly fluctuations from 20% (extractive industry) to almost 90% in the supply of electricity and heat.
