The birth rate crisis and migration outflow of the population do not ensure normal reproduction of labor resources, according to preliminary data of the National Bureau of Statistics. The number of population with permanent residence as of 01.01.2025 amounted to 2381.3 thousand people. The published data of the official census-2024 recorded 2401,2 thousand inhabitants in Moldova. At the beginning of 2024 and up to the announcement of the census results, the official figure of 2.424 million people with permanent residence on the territory of the country was presented.
In 2024, 23.6 thousand children were born, which is about 0.5 thousand (or 2%) less than in the previous year. The total fertility rate in 2024 increased and amounted to 1.66 live births per woman. However, it does not reach the generational replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman of reproductive age, the NBS notes.
The number of deaths in 2024 amounted to 33.5 thousand people, almost remaining at the level of the previous year (- 0.3 thousand). The overall mortality rate recorded an increase – from 13.7% in 2023 to 13.9%. The value of “excess male mortality” in 2024 amounted to 115 cases per 100 female deaths.
The migration of the population with permanent residence follows the tendency of recent years to decrease the movement of labor force abroad. Nevertheless, net migration (balance of emigrants/immigrants) recorded a negative value – minus 32.6 thousand people for 2023. Of the total number of emigrants, the largest share, about 39%, is occupied by persons aged 20-39 years.
