At the same time, the quality of goods in the capital’s retailers is assessed by consumers as average and below average. The price in chain supermarkets is in the range of 15-18 lei/kg.
According to EastFruit price monitoring, at the beginning of May 2025, the level of average prices for apples of almost all varieties in Moldova is at the five-year maximum for this period. Apples prices were close to the current level (but still 5-10 % lower) only in early May 2020 and 2021. In May last year, this commodity in bulk on the Moldovan market was almost twice as cheap.
Major operators of the Moldovan fruit market claim that the increase in prices for apples at the end of April is seasonal. This is due to the rapid reduction of stocks of goods, especially of export quality. Many traders completely sold out the inventory of high quality apples to external buyers as early as mid-April. Relatively small volumes of goods of not the highest quality remained for the domestic market “frees”.
Taking into account that the start of new crop fruit season will not be early, as well as significant losses of stone fruits and berry plantations from frosts, operators of Moldovan fruit market predict high demand for apples. At the same time, traders do not exclude that in late spring – early summer of this year, imported apples will appear on the shelves of Moldovan stores, even more expensive, but also of higher quality.
