The statement came as the process of appointing the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova was being finalized. Dagovan compared the mechanism for appointing ambassadors in the United States with the procedure followed in Moldova. In the United States, the president nominates a candidate for the position of ambassador, after which the Senate reviews and confirms the nomination. Without the Senate’s consent, the appointment process is not considered complete.
“In our country, Parliament can be informed, can discuss the nomination, and can issue an opinion on it, but it cannot say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the appointment during a plenary session,” stated Alla Darovannaia.
The lawmaker also criticized the appointment of certain individuals to diplomatic posts, citing as an example former mayor Petru Frunze, who was appointed Moldova’s ambassador to China. According to Darovanna, based on information appearing in the press, he lacks diplomatic training or experience in this field, and, as has been claimed, his command of English is insufficient.
In this regard, Darovannaia believes that Parliament should be granted the right to approve or reject candidates for ambassadorial posts.
“For such an important position, the professional qualifications and integrity of the candidate cannot be left solely to the discretion of the government and the president,” the lawmaker emphasized.
It is worth noting that candidates for ambassadorial posts undergo a preliminary review and approval process in the parliamentary committee on foreign policy.
