Romania no longer wants to help Moldova and Ukraine

Dan Dungaciu, a Romanian sociologist and first deputy chairman of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party, believes it is time for Romania to stop providing financial support to other countries during this extremely difficult period. He criticizes the lack of transparency in how these funds are used.

According to the politician, Romania should no longer send money to Ukraine or the Republic of Moldova. The AUR leader also considers it “absurd” that Romanian citizens are being forced to pay for foreign funding, romaniatv.net reports.

“The economic deficit is what it is. Romania must stop all external financing, whether it concerns Ukraine or the Republic of Moldova. The Republic of Moldova will finance itself, from our point of view, only through the Moldovan Investment Fund we have proposed. There is a bill in Parliament; the Moldovan Fund means effective investments for both Romania and the Republic of Moldova, and that’s it. Not free money, not money where we don’t even know where it’s going or how,” Dungaciu stated.

“We very rarely know exactly how these funds are used. Often, they are used exclusively for political purposes. Any external funding should be halted, at least while Romania is facing economic problems. From my point of view, it’s absurd to burden Romanian citizens with huge sums of money that, between you and me, we don’t even know exist,” the analyst said on a television program.

On Ukraine—a separate issue

Dungaciu also says that Romania is helping Ukraine both through the SAFE program and through funds allocated to the European budget.

“We know that Romania directly assists Ukraine through certain funds and loans it provides, including under the SAFE program. Romania allocates money to the European budget for Ukraine. Romania funds the common European army through the SAFE program. This also means money for ensuring Europe’s security, plus money for NATO. Because this money goes in many directions, regardless of how much certain parties try to redirect or duplicate it.”

“There are many areas where Romania allocates funds, but we don’t fully understand exactly which security project these funds are being channeled toward,” the sociologist stated.

The politician believes that the SAFE program is not a security program, but rather a political one. Dungaciu believes that a military partnership with Turkey is the best option for Romania.

“It’s absolutely clear that SAFE is a political project, not a security project. There’s a very simple idea behind the SAFE program: I want us to stay in power. That’s all there is to it. If you had a strategic mindset, you’d also be thinking about what to do. If you ask me, I’ll say that Turkey represents untapped potential. We haven’t utilized it properly, including within the framework of our military partnership. Turkey has a significant industrial base, and if you want to play an important role in the Balkans, you need to have ties with Turkey,” said Dungaciu.
