The heads of state and government of the European Union countries are going to hold an emergency summit in Brussels on January 22 on the situation around Greenland and the development of a common position on the introduction by U.S. President Donald Trump of additional duties of 10% against eight EU member states because of sending their military to Greenland, reports Logos Press.

The United States will have to pay at least $700 million for Greenland if it comes to buying the world’s largest island, according to Logos Press.

Republican Congressman Randy Fine has introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to “annex Greenland and grant it U.S. statehood”, according to Logos Press.

The European Union may agree to a “strengthened US role” in Greenland in exchange for assurances from Washington on continued support for Ukraine, according to Logos Press.

EU countries are alarmed by NATO’s lack of response to Trump’s statements regarding Greenland. Not only Denmark, but also other countries have changed their position: they fear that the alliance will not be able to protect Copenhagen’s interests, the Financial Times writes.

The United States will act on Greenland in the interest of U.S. national security whether it likes it or not, according to Logos Press.

Shares in Greenland-related companies have jumped by tens of percent since the beginning of the year, which may indicate speculative investor sentiment, Logos Press reported.

U.S. officials are discussing the possibility of lump-sum payments to Greenlanders in exchange for agreeing to secede from Denmark and join the United States.

The first option is an armed invasion by the US. Another possible option is coercion. Trump could offer to buy Greenland from Denmark, promising significant investment in the island’s economy.
