Moldova’s current account of the balance of payments in the first quarter of 2025 showed an alarming increase in the deficit to 26% of GDP, exceeding $1 bln. The closest to this level was recorded 16 years ago. Last year’s figures were much more modest, although also very high: 17% of GDP in the second and third quarters of 2024 and 18% in the fourth quarter of 2024.

In the first 7 months of 2025, total state budget revenues amounted to MDL 43.7 billion, 16% higher than last year’s figure, Logos Press reported.

The execution of the state budget for the end of the first half of 2025 ended with a deficit of 7.7 billion lei, while at the end of May it amounted to 5.6 billion lei, Logos Press reported.

The parliament approved in the second reading the amendments to the revenue and expenditure parts of the state budget-2025, increasing them by 647.7 million lei,” Logos Presse reported.

According to preliminary data from the NBM, in the first quarter of 2025, the current account deficit of the balance of payments of the Republic of Moldova increased by 2.3 times over the year, exceeding the domestic production of goods and services by more than a quarter, Logos Press reports.

In the 2024 national public budget and this year’s adjusted budget, the share of external and internal borrowing and grants reached 31%, 10% higher than the average for 2013-2020,” Logos Press reported.
