A mission of U.S. specialists is visiting Moldova from July 6 to 10. As part of the visit, the leadership of the Customs Service held a working meeting with U.S. experts, as well as representatives of the State Financial Control Inspectorate.

OTA implements institutional support programs in more than 100 countries worldwide. The Office’s projects are aimed at strengthening public financial institutions, improving the efficiency of tax and customs administration, and combating financial crimes.

The purpose of the mission to Moldova is to assess the feasibility of implementing a technical assistance project aimed at improving mechanisms for preventing and detecting financial irregularities, as well as strengthening the fight against cross-border economic crimes.

The focus is on combating customs fraud

During the meeting, representatives of the Customs Service presented existing control mechanisms, including risk analysis, customs inspections, investigations, and interagency cooperation, all aimed at protecting state budget revenues.

The parties paid particular attention to issues of cooperation among government agencies participating in the National Anti-Fraud System, as well as opportunities for implementing international best practices in the field of combating financial fraud.

Following the consultations, the participants discussed prospects for further cooperation and possible areas for technical support from U.S. experts.

As noted by the Customs Service, strengthening anti-fraud capabilities is part of the Republic of Moldova’s preparations for accession to the European Union. The agency continues to bring the customs control system and the protection of the state’s financial interests into line with European requirements, while simultaneously improving conditions for legitimate foreign trade and combating cross-border economic crimes.
