The EU recently updated its rules on the use of antimicrobials in animal husbandry and removed Brazil from the list of countries authorized to export certain animal products to the European market. The restrictions will apply to exports of meat, fish, and honey and will take effect on September 3.
However, Olof Gill, the European Commission’s trade spokesperson, noted that the requirement for guarantees regarding the control of antibiotic use is not new. According to him, the EU has been raising this issue in its dialogue with Brazil for at least three to four years. At the same time, Brussels expects Brazil to provide not only declarations but also documented oversight mechanisms, according to ukragroconsult.
European authorities believe that Brazil has not yet provided sufficient information on procedures for controlling and monitoring the use of antimicrobials in the livestock sector. Against this backdrop, other MERCOSUR countries have been able to maintain access to the relevant export scheme after providing the necessary documentation and guarantees.
