The delegation includes PAS deputies Radu Marian, Adrian Belucel and Andrian Keptonar. They met with a number of senators and congressmen from both the Democratic Party and the Republicans.
“In the economic field, we emphasized the recent adoption in our Parliament of a legislative initiative to remove tariffs on the vast majority of imported goods from the United States, in order to facilitate the access of Moldovan enterprises to American technologies. The American partners appreciated this step, especially in the context of the lowest level of tariffs applied by the USA to Moldova,” Marian said.
The delegation also expressed gratitude for the recent investment of $130 million dollars for the construction of the Straseni-Gutinas power transmission line, which will be realized by an American company.
“Moldova is in an ideal position for U.S. investors looking to expand production and support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts,” the lawmaker said.
Besides the meetings in Congress, the delegation also participated in Spring Meetings, a joint event of the IMF and the World Bank, where they talked to IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. They touched on the current challenges to the global economy caused by the war in Iran.
The ruling party MPs also met representatives of the Moldovan diaspora in Washington.
We shall remind you that on April 9, the Moldovan parliament approved in the first reading a draft law providing for the abolition of customs duties on imports of most goods originating from the USA. In case of final adoption of the document, duties will remain only for certain sensitive categories of agricultural products – beef, pork, poultry meat, milk and dairy products, as well as sugar and sugar-containing products. It is noted that imports of these goods are insignificant.
