The new regulation is intended to bring national legislation into line with European Union rules and strengthen the protection of Moldovan products with high added value.

The law aims to modernize the system for protecting products associated with a specific region of production, traditional technologies, or specific quality characteristics, according to a statement from the State Agency for Intellectual Property (AGEPI).

The document provides for clearer procedures for registering new designations, modifying product requirements, and managing assets related to geographical indications.

According to the drafters, the updated system should create additional opportunities for producers and producer associations, allowing for more effective use of registered quality designations in supply chains.

One of the expected outcomes will be increased recognition of Moldovan products and more informed consumer choices thanks to clear product labeling.

Harmonization with EU legislation

The adoption of the law is part of Moldova’s commitments within the process of integration into the European Union.

The document was included in the National Program for the Republic of Moldova’s Accession to the EU for 2025–2029 in the section on intellectual property law.

The new law provides for:
– full implementation of the provisions of EU Directive 2004/48/EC on the enforcement of intellectual property rights;

– partial implementation of the requirements of EU Regulation 2023/2411 on the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products;

– partial implementation of EU Regulation 2024/1143 on geographical indications for wine, alcoholic beverages, and agricultural products, as well as on traditional specialties guaranteed;

What’s Changing for Businesses

Geographical indications allow producers to protect the unique characteristics of their products and link them to a specific region or production tradition.

For Moldova, this mechanism is particularly significant for agriculture, the food industry, and producers of traditional goods, who can use such designations to enhance their competitiveness in domestic and European markets.

The development of the geographical indications system is also seen as a tool for supporting the local economy and preserving cultural heritage.

The bill was approved by the government on April 1, 2026, passed by parliament in the first reading on April 24, and in the second reading on June 11.

The legislation will take effect on April 2, 2027.
