The proposals concerned heating, gas and electricity in the context of a harsh winter and rising household costs. They were prepared by the opposition parties United List (UL) and Latvia First Place (LFP). The amendments envisioned a reduction in the VAT rate to 5% on a number of energy resources used for household needs, jauns.lv reports.

At the same time, as Logos Press previously reported, from January 1 to May 31, 2026, Riga heat supply company “Rīgas siltums” will not fine customers for overdue heating payments. The measure is dictated by the fact that heat consumption has increased sharply due to severe frosts. According to “Rīgas siltums” estimates, it may increase by 59% in Riga in January.
