The project was developed by the famous Dutch architectural firm OMA, which has long been famous for its unconventional approach to urban architecture, writes Archinect. Instead of a traditional rectangular tower, the architects created an asymmetrical volume, as if cut from a solid block. Thanks to two large slices, the building changes its appearance depending on the viewpoint: from one side it resembles a giant pyramid, from the other side it looks like a sculptural terraced structure.
The total area of the complex is 43 thousand square meters. m. Inside there is a hotel, residential apartments, offices and commercial premises.
However, the unusual shape performs not only decorative function. The stepped facade helps to organically connect the high-rise with the surrounding urban environment – the nearby park and the high-speed railroad station. The resulting terraces and open areas have become additional public spaces with panoramic views of the city.
At the base of the tower, a spacious public atrium with landscaping, water features and recreational areas has been created. The architects expect it to become a new point of attraction for residents and guests of the district.
OMA notes that the project is inspired by an ancient Chinese expression: “Above is paradise, and below is Hangzhou.” According to the authors’ idea, the tower should become a visual symbol of the new business district of the city. A 35,000-square-meter residential tower with a facade echoing the geometry of the main building has also been built next to it.
Hangzhou Prism is yet another example of Hangzhou’s large-scale transformation. One of the fastest growing cities in China is experiencing a construction boom, and several other major architectural projects, including new cultural, sports and commercial complexes, are planned in the coming years.
