Demand for cash in Moldova remains high

In March, according to the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) data, the trend of excess of cash withdrawals over cash inflows continued in the banking sector of Moldova. These indicators emphasize the continuing high demand of the population for cash.

The volume of cash withdrawals from banks’ cash offices in March exceeded the volume of cash deposits by 275 million lei, the NBM reported. A similar tendency was observed in the previous months, when withdrawals regularly exceeded deposits.

Experts attribute this to the population’s preference to use cash settlements, despite the development of digital technologies and the authorities’ efforts to transfer settlements to non-cash and make them more transparent.

In the reporting month, the volume of cash receipts amounted to over 15 billion lei, up by 10% compared to the same month of the previous year. They were provided mainly by revenues from the sale of consumer goods, which accounted for about 60% of all the funds received at the banks’ cash desks. The NBM notes that entrepreneurs deposited 1,358 million lei more in their accounts in March than in the previous year (+17%).

The volume of cash withdrawals from bank vaults in March 2026 amounted to about 16 billion lei, up by 10.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.

It is important to note that for 2026, the requirements for legal entities to comply with the limit of cash balance in the company’s cash desk remain in place.

“Cash discipline” requires that all funds in excess of the limit be deposited in the bank. Exceptions are payroll days and weekends/holidays, if operations are conducted on those days.
