The funds will be channelled towards education, skills training, energy access, the conservation of water and energy resources, and other local projects, notes Reuters.

Amazon is attempting to ease tensions surrounding data centres

The new AWS programme has been launched against a backdrop of growing controversy in the US over the consequences of the large-scale construction of data centres required for the development of artificial intelligence. Such facilities require significant amounts of electricity and resources, raising concerns amongst local communities, authorities and consumers.

According to Reuters, more than 100 moratoriums on data centre construction are being considered in various regions across the US. Against this backdrop, Amazon has announced its intention to increase investment directly in the communities hosting its infrastructure.

The programme has been named ‘Built Together’. According to Amazon, communities will be able to identify the areas where funding is most needed. These include education and vocational training, reducing energy costs, conserving water and energy resources, as well as other local priorities.

AWS also plans to expand its network of specialised Modular Training Centres, located near data centres. The company reports that three such centres are currently operational, with a further six in the development stage. As part of the new programme, Amazon intends to establish a further 16 centres.

The company expects that by the end of 2028, this network will be able to train up to 100,000 workers annually in in-demand specialisms directly in the regions where the data centres are located. According to Amazon, the training will be funded by the company.

Investment in AI infrastructure – a necessity

According to Reuters, Amazon invested $276 billion in data centres between 2011 and 2025. Major projects and expansions are being carried out, in particular, in the states of Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi.

AWS chief Matt Garman stated that the accelerated development of data centres is necessary due to global competition in the field of artificial intelligence. According to him, countries that lead in AI will largely determine the further development of this technology and gain economic and strategic advantages.

At the same time, AWS has announced its intention to become ‘water positive’ by 2030 — that is, to return more water to communities than its data centres consume. The company reports that it has already achieved 75 per cent of this target.

Thus, AWS’s investment programme combines the development of AI infrastructure with funding for education, skills training and community projects in the areas where this infrastructure is located. For Amazon, this is also a way of gaining greater support from local communities against a backdrop of growing concern over the energy and environmental impacts of data centre construction.

Logos Press previously reported that the developer NorthPoint Development had offered to pay $10,000 to every household in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, if the large-scale data centre project were to receive the necessary permits.
