Hungary has blocked the “accelerated European integration” of Ukraine and Moldova

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that Budapest had succeeded in having the wording regarding the accelerated accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union removed from the European Council’s final declaration. According to Magyar in X, all member states of the bloc have agreed on the revised version of the document.

At the European Council meeting, there was a four-hour debate on the adoption of the declaration. “For the first time in a year and a half, we were able to adopt a final declaration supported by all member states,” Magyar noted.

According to him, the document had been refined over the course of several weeks. In addition, “at the very last moment,” the wording regarding “accelerating accession” was removed from the text.

In June, the European Union agreed to open the first negotiation chapter on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova. As Madyar previously clarified, the positions of EU countries on the issue of further negotiations regarding Ukraine’s accession to the bloc differed significantly.

He emphasized that some member states advocated for the immediate opening of two new negotiation chapters with Ukraine, while others favored opening all 33 chapters. Hungary, he said, is among the countries that consider a slower, phased process to be necessary.
