Visiting the Trevi Fountain in Rome has become chargeable

Rome has introduced new rules for tourists: photos against the backdrop of baroque sculptures and the traditional throwing of a coin into the water are no longer free. From February 1, 2026 the entrance to the area near the famous Trevi Fountain will cost visitors two euros, according to Logos Press.

City officials expect this to help deal with the excessive influx of people to one of the Italian capital’s most popular attractions.

The fee is charged for access to a specially organized space directly by the fountain. The system is open from 9:00 to 22:00 on most days, and from 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays. However, the area in front of the fountain remains open and free of charge for everyone.

Residents of Rome are exempt from the fee. People with disabilities and their escorts, as well as children under the age of six can also get to the fountain free of charge.

Tickets costing two euros are available for pre-purchase online – the site has already been launched and works in Italian and English, writes Bild. In addition, tickets are sold directly at the entrance (payment by card) and in a number of tourist information centers.

In pursuit of the perfect shot

The Trevi Fountain, located in the very center of the Eternal City, has long been a symbol of Rome. It gained special fame thanks to the iconic scene with Anita Ekberg in Federico Fellini’s movie “The Sweet Life”. Every day tens of thousands of tourists come here to take photos, make a wish and throw a coin into the water. During peak hours, the pool area becomes a real battle for the best selfies.

For about a year there has been a limit on the number of people at the fountain – no more than 400 people can be there at a time. In 2025, the total number of visitors exceeded 10 million, and on the busiest days it reached 70 thousand people.

The introduction of paid access, according to the authorities, should reduce overcrowding, increase the comfort of tourists and help to preserve the monument.

History of the Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain was erected in Baroque style in the period from 1732 to 1762 by order of Pope Clement XII. It got its name from the neighborhood of the same name in Rome. The fountain is fed by the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which is the only ancient aqueduct that is still in operation today. It has been functioning without interruption since 19 B.C., i.e. for more than two thousand years.
