According to profit.ro, Romgaz intends to take up to 30% of the Moldovan wholesale natural gas market.

“According to our estimates, when we open a subsidiary in Moldova, there is a potential of up to 1 billion cubic meters (the total volume of the country’s consumption), while we could provide 20-30% of the gas imported by the state,” Romgaz CEO Răzvan Popescu said.

Romgaz intends to sell gas in Moldova at a higher price than in Romania. The company’s calculations show that the business will reach the break-even point when selling about 100,000 MWh per year at a price of about 38 euros/MWh (about 190 Romanian lei (750 Moldovan lei)/MWh), while the trader currently sells gas in Romania itself at 120 RON (470 MDL)/MWh – 58% cheaper.

Currently, Romania is a net importer of natural gas, while Moldova, according to Romanian Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, receives U.S. LNG from Greece in transit.

The situation may change once the Neptun Deep field in the Black Sea begins production in 2027. Romgaz and OMV Petrom own this project on parity terms – 50% each.
